Retired Major General Prince Charles Johnson III, who has been nominated by President Joseph N. Boakai for the position of Minister of Defense, has handed over his authority to the newly appointed Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), Colonel Davidson F. Forleh.

The turnover ceremony was held on Monday, February 5, 2024 at the Barclay Training Center. It featured the signing of turnover documents, military drills and a Change of Command exhibition.

In his remarks, Maj. Gen. Johnson credited his success as Chief of Staff to the support of his fellow soldiers and his predecessor, Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Daniel D. Ziankahn.

He encouraged Brig. Gen. Forleh to ensure that the AFL remains apolitical, maintaining its integrity in all circumstances.

Speaking, Brig. Gen. Forleh expressed his delight at assuming the highest seat in the military, and promised to build upon the expertise and legacies of his two predecessors.

Former Defense Minister Daniel D. Ziankahn, who is seen as a father figure and a symbol of leadership in the army, expressed his joy at seeing his dedicated colleagues excel in leadership positions and offered his guidance and support. Both Maj. Gen. Johnson and out-going Deputy Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Geraldine Janet George-Johnson were honored with plaques and flags, symbolizing their authority and legacies.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the US Defense Attaché, members of the ECOWAS Advisory Training Team and the families of the out-going and in-coming Chiefs of Staff.
