Hon. J. Milton Teahjay, Sinoe County Senator

There seems to be no willingness on the part of voters in Sinoe County to replace the incumbent Senator, J. Milton Teahjay, in 2023 general and presidential elections in the county.

The Hot Pepper has learned that despite hard-line opposition to his re-election, Senator Teahjay is still preferred by cross-section of citizens to represent them in the Senate following the election.

There are reports that the incumbent lawmaker is widely favored by the National Kru Congress, which exercises dominance of over 91% of the total votes of the county.

As the block convenes its extra-ordinary session  next year, members appear certain to select Teahjay as a candidate, considering the political situation in the country and the positive contribution the senator has made over the years.

A keen observer, who claims to be a member of the Sapo ethnic group residing in Sinoe, said the incumbent is expected to be re-elected not on the basis of ethnicity but purely on his performance, both in the Senate and in the county over the last eight years as senator of the county.

The observer, who preferred not to be named for fear of tribal reprisal as some member of his tribe are bitterly opposed to Teahjay’s leadership, told this paper in the county’s capital, Greenville, that J. Milton Teahjay is the brain behind most of the development initiative enjoyed by Sinoe citizens at home today.

He disclosed that, while other politicians were concentrating on building latrines in the county’s capital, Greenville, Senator Teajay was using his allowances and salaries to build the interior part of the county.

The observer said most interior towns in Sinoe County can today boast of safe-drinking water, health centers, schools and sustainable road connectivity, through the instrumentality of the senator, which he said is responsible for his growing popularity.

“This kind gesture by the senator, coupled with his ability to defend the county’s interest on the floor in the Senate, makes him a powerful political hero in the county for now,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Senator Milton Teahjay is expected to be challenged by two members of his own legislative caucus: Representative Crayton Duncan and Representative Matthew Zarzar.

It is unclear whether the two challengers can defeat the incumbent in 2023 if his popularity continues to grow among the citizens.
