The Chief Executive Officer of Orange Liberia, Jean Marius Yao, has toured and inspected on-going construction of a new corporate social responsibility project, Orange Village and Maternity Clinic.

The construction is taking place in Mama Toma Village, Brewerville.  When completed, the self-sustaining project will provide access to education, healthcare and safe-drinking water for hundreds of people in that area.

Sara Buchanan, Executive Director of Orange Foundation and Orange Digital Center in Liberia, said the project was being implemented as part of Orange Foundations’ immediate and long-term goal to positively impact many Liberians. She explained that the project was being done in Mama Toma Village, a historic site well-placed to impact the people of Brewerville. “The Orange Village and Maternity Clinic is a fantastic project which goes beyond health to also renovate the school and build a new canteen, events hall and water tower.  This is a project that has a high impact on a local level,” Buchanan said.

Buchanan explained that the maternity clinic and clinic projects were essential to the community because residents usually had to travel for miles to be able to access the nearest health facility. “This is a project that is going to impact women positively,” she pointed, “This is where women come and give birth, where girls and boys come and get an education. This is where everybody come together as a community in what was formerly Sande bush.”

In addition to the maternity clinic and education facilities, Orange Foundation is also constructing an events hall to host events and a canteen for the students to be able to eat their meals in a clean and modern environment. Buchanan outlined that the events hall was being built as part of the Orange Village to serve as a source of income for the village and to help ensure that the project is self-sustainable.

“Mama Toma village is a place that is known for hosting traditional events, women’s events and other community programs, so having this events hall will enable traditional women and their guests to gather and have their meetings and events right here in the village.”

Orange Liberia’s Chief Executive Officer Yao expressed excitement at the progress of the construction, which he said was on target, to be completed and dedicated within a three-month span. He stated that the project was essential for Orange because the company had a passion for positively impacting local communities. “We are not here just to do business and make a profit, but also to support the community in terms of health, education and other essential needs,” declared Yao.

Community members hailed Orange Foundation for the project and stated that it was the most major development initiative the community has experienced.  They lauded Orange Foundation for listening to their concerns, taking into account their needs and for making the level of investment to build modern facilities that would positively impact the health and education of the current and future generations of the Brewerville community.
