Pres. Weah Lights Up West Point Landscape With New Sports Pitch
The President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, Saturday, May 20, 2023, dedicated the new West Point sports pitch that turns the slum community’s skylines glittering and brings joy to young people needing recreation and sports excellence.
The once unkempt spot used for decades as a soccer field is now transformed into a modern field, fully turfed and up-to-date.
It is named after the late Albert Doe, a one-time talented player of West Point.
Flanked by officials of government as well as local administration of West Point, President Weah cut the ribbon to the new structure before touring it from pole to pole.
The President’s desire to give West Point a full-blown sports park was hindered by the lack of adequate space to do so, as most of the residents’ properties are cramped up.
Speaking to reporters later, President Weah expressed delight over the transformation of the late Albert Doe Sports Pitch, describing it a fulfillment of his plan to develop the country, including the provision of recreation centers that enable and afford Liberian youth opportunities to develop their individual talents.
President Weah also announced that there are plans to extend such facilities to other areas in the city and beyond so that Liberian youth can have access to facilities they were denied for time immemorial.
“From West Point, we will be going to Clara Town, where I lived as a youth coming up, to dedicate another modern recreation center,” the Chief Executive said. “Then we will move to the D. Tweh Field in New Kru Town. Many other communities in the lineup will follow subsequently.”
President Weah emphasized the importance of Liberia to consider hosting the African Cup of Nations, owing to the massive transformation taking place in the sporting sector, particularly the upgrading of football facilities.
He called on the community to make maximum use of the facility and keep it clean and safe, and open to all without discrimination.
