Pro-Democracy Group Hails Nyonblee Karnga’s Leadership
–Urges Senate To Maintain Bi-Partisan Posture
The pro-democracy and anti-corruption advocacy group, Green Democratic Movement (GDM), has lauded what it terms the responsible and priority-driven leadership of President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, over the last one year.
GDM, in a statement issued Tuesday, February 4, 2025, described the first legislative year of the Unity Party-led government as challenging, but noted the Liberian Senate, under the leadership of Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, made significant strides, with huge prospect of greater achievements—judging from the result-oriented approach exhibited by the Senate’s leadership.
The group named, among other things, the swift passage of the resolution for the establishment of the Office for War & Economic Crimes Court, declaration of assets by members of the Senate, open debates on critical national issues, and the mature coordination between the Senate and the Executive, in particular, and the Legislature, as a whole.
GDM also identified the level of tolerance exhibited by the Senate as a body and individual senators in dealing with mounting criticisms from their constituents and other segments of the society, describing such posture as a mark of responsive and responsible leadership.
“The bi-partisan decision-making reputation of the Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence leadership of the Senate is one major eye-catcher,” the pro-democracy group observed, describing it as “remarkable and encouraging”.
GDM hailed members of the Senate under Pro-Tempore Karnga-Lawrence for placing themselves above pettiness and emotional outbursts, despite very provocative and, in some cases, irritating indictments that have the propensity to injure the reputation of individual senators and the Senate as an institution.
Green Democratic Movement further urged Pro-Tempore Karnga-Lawrence to continuously ensure that the Senate maintains its inclusive and bi-partisan stance in making critical decisions that border on the security, economic growth and development of the country.
The group however vowed that, as a pro-democracy and anti-corruption advocacy movement, it would not ignore any errors or intentional acts of the Senate that have the potential to undermine the economic interest and forward-march of the country.
