Redlight Market Demolished!
Redlight market, one of the biggest marketplaces in Monrovia, has been demolished and merchants who occupied the market relocated in the refurbished Omega Market. The demolition, which was carried out by the Paynesville City Corporation (PCC), in collaboration with the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), started early Monday morning, July 12, 2021.
Before the demolition, it was perceived that vendors of the market would hinder the demolition process, as there were rumors of threats to obstruct the demolition. However, the demolition was smoothly carried out, with officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) posted for eventuality.
The demolition affected many of those selling in makeshift structures up to Parker Paint’s intersection, “Gobacho” Market, Ma Kebbeh Market, as well as the Pipeline Road Market.
According to a Ministry of Public Works source, the market was demolished to create avenue for the pavement of the main road. This, the source said, is in line with President George M. Weah’s vision to connect all major cities with paved roads.
