Montserrado County’s electoral district #1 Representative, Rugie Yatu Barry, has identified with the Muslim community through the donation of a cow and some bags of rice during the Holy Month of Ramanan.
Representative Barry provided 50 bags of 25kg rice, a cow and cash sum of L$50,000 particularly to the Habibou Mosque, Cowfield, Fendell, which is a portion of her constituency.
Presenting the items to the imams on Friday, April 5, 2024, the lawmaker said the gesture aims at identifying with Muslims in the country during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
According to her, the move signifies her way of giving back to the Muslim community while they are engaged in fasting and praying to Almighty Allah for the country and its leaders.
The donation was made to the imams in the district for daily breakfast as they confine themselves in the mosque during these last ten days of the month going through intensive fasting and praying.
“My people, y’all thank you first for welcoming me here even though this is my district, but you people are the ones in full control of this territory. This donation is not anything much; it’s just intended to identify with the Muslim community for the sacrifices being made for our country,” she noted.
Representative Barry acknowledged the many contributions of the Muslim community, emphasizing their effort in praying for the maintenance of peace and democracy in Liberia as well as their prayers for the government to seek the interest of the citizens.
On behalf of the Muslim community, Imam Alhussaine Sow lauded Representative Barry for what he termed her timely intervention.
He added that this gesture comes especially at a time when Muslims in Liberia and around the globe are fasting and praying for peace.
Muslims in Liberia and around the globe go through this exercise once every year in commitment to obeying one of the most important pillars of the Islamic Religion.
In a related development during the weekend, Representative Rugie Yatu Barry paid a visit to the government’s only referral health facility, Bensonville Hospital, at which time she was informed by the management about the many challenges.
She disclosed to the Officer-In-Charge, Dr. Paye Gbamie, that the sum of US$100,000 is placed in the 2024 national budget for the hospital but stated that the amount is insufficient to effectively run the facility and cater to patients, promising to advocate for an addition.
Representative Barry, who has just returned from the United States of America on a visit, further told the gathering that she has concluded a negotiation with a team of medical practitioners, adding that the team has agreed to come to Liberia to carry out medical outreach and conduct professional training, among others.
While thanking the management team of the hospital and recognizing the challenges, the lawmaker has urged the workers of the entity to remain professional, disclosing that a 44-footed container of medical materials is expected to arrive in Liberia soon.
In a brief remark, the OIC of the Officer-In-Charge, Dr. Paye Gbamie, lauded Representative Barry for farsightedness to seek the effective running of the health facility. He also highlighted the renovation of the hospital, mobility for staff and the inclusion of volunteer health workers on the government payroll as some of the major challenges, and called on Representative Barry to lobby with her colleagues to address these key issues.
