The Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia (WLCL) has inducted a new corps of officers to steer the affairs of the caucus for the next three years. The induction ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, on the grounds of the Capitol Building in Monrovia.

Margibi County’s electoral district #3 Representative, Ellen Attoh-Wreh, was elected Chairperson of the caucus and officially assumed leadership during the ceremony. She succeeds Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, who formally turned over the gavel of authority to the new chairperson.

The officers installed are Representative Ellen Attoh-Wreh, Chairperson; Representative Prescilla Abram Cooper, Co-Chair on National Affairs; Representative Rugie Yatu Barry, Co-Chair on International Affairs; Representative Bintu Massalay, Secretary; Representative Julie Fatorma Wiah, Financial Secretary; and Representative Gbessie Sonii-Feika, Treasurer.

The historic event was graced by Richard Nagbe Koon, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who served as Guest Speaker, while the Vice President of Liberia, Jeremiah Kpaan Koung, served as Special Guest of Honor.

Also in attendance were members of the 55th Legislature, Comfort Lamptey, Country Representative of UN Women Liberia, the Minister of Gender, members of the Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL), FEJAL, WONGOSOL, and several representatives of women-focused organizations and civil society groups.

Making remarks, the President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate and out-going Chairperson of the Women Legislative Caucus, Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, congratulated the new team of leadership of the WLCL, and expressed appreciation to members of the international community for support given the Women Legislative Caucus of Liberia.

Formed in 2006 by female lawmakers of the 52nd National Legislature, the WLCL aims to define and promote a unified agenda for women across political, religious, and ethnic divides. It seeks to amplify the voices of Liberian women on critical national issues, champion gender-sensitive legislations, and advocate for women’s empowerment and participation in all sectors of society.

Currently, the 55th Legislature comprises eleven female lawmakers (eight representatives and three senators) who continue to work through the WLCL to mainstream gender perspectives in legislation, budgets, and national policies.
