The National Road Safety Secretariat on Thursday, December 1, 2022 celebrated World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, under the theme, “Remember, Support and Act”.

The program was held at the Monrovia City Cooperation (MCC), and aimed at providing a platform for road traffic victims and their families.

Speaking at the program, the Coordinator of the Road Safety Secretariat, Samuel C. Wonasue, said some of the accidents in Liberia are caused by negligence and disregard for road traffic regulation resulting from road traffic signs, drivers overtaking and over-speeding, leaving defective vehicles in the middle of the road and the construction of roads with many curves.

According to him, out of the number of cases received by the Monrovia Traffic Court, 90 cases came from the Liberia National Police (LNP), which is charged with the responsibility to investigate and send to court all accidents cases. Out of these cases, 13 resulted in death, 6 resulted in injuries, 26 resulted into property damage, 7 resulted to death and property damage, 13 resulted in death, injuries and properties damage, and 11 were as  a result of driving without License (DWOL).

He said, as of 2023, anyone found in driving without license, insurance or vehicle registration, as required by the Vehicle and Traffic Law of Liberia 1972, will faced the weight of the Law.

He noted that, from Vamoma House, 24th Street, Sinkor, to ELWA intersection, and from ELWA to the Roberts International Airport (RIA) are grid zones for accident. He encouraged those driving in those areas to drive with care.
