Sen. Batekwa Proposes US$100 Million For Road Construction In Liberia
Grand Kru County Senator, Numene Batekwa, is recommending to government the allotment of US$100 million each year for the construction of primary roads across Liberia.
The Grand Kru County lawmaker indicated that the country’s economy is stagnated and highly closed due to the lack of paved road-connectivity in the country.
He maintained that, if the proposal is supported by his colleagues in the Senate and, henceforth, US$100 million is allotted every year, in five years the government would have paved more than five hundred miles of primary roads.
The Senator said this will gradually redeem the Liberian people in all of the rural counties from extreme suffering, experienced every year during the rainy season.
Senator Batekwa also noted that the pavement of primary roads will unlock the country’s stagnated economy as farmers and other business institutions will move their goods, equipment and supplies to enhance their businesses.
He argued further that improvement in primary roads will help reduce prices of essential goods and services during every rainy season, encourage free movement of people throughout the country and enhance healthcare delivery.
The Grand Kru senator said his proposal is line with President George Weah’s commitment to the Liberian people during his inauguration in 2018 that he will ensure all county capitals are connected with paved roads before leaving office.
Speaking Monday when citizens of Gbarlakpo community, Grand Kru County, honored and gowned him for his victory in the last senatorial election in the county, the lawmaker touched on his contribution to the development of Grand Kru County.
The Senator disclosed that he is the brain behind most of the development initiatives in the county, especially in the area of infrastructure.
Senator Batekwa, who served the county in the House of Representatives before emerging as senator in 2020, said he was very instrumental in the construction of numerous strategic feeder roads and bridges linking various communities in the county and with the county’s neighbors.
He also disclosed that his effort led to the construction of several schools in the remote parts of the county to accelerate learning and education.
