President George Manneh Weah on Monday, November 27, 2023, departed the country for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to join other world leaders for the famous COP28 conference.

Heads of the United Nations Climate Change High Level Champions, UNFCCC, UN Women, IUCN and Women’s Environmental and Development Organization (WEDO) are also expected to be in attendance.

Prior to the formal opening of the Conference of Parties (COP28) United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention on Thursday, November 30, 2023, President Weah, a Climate Change Champion, is expected to attend and participate in a global conference on gender and environment data under the theme, “Counting on a Sustainable Future: Global Conference on Gender and Environment”, on November 28–29, 2023.

Speakers and participants will include UN agencies, government officials and policymakers, leaders and commitment makers of the Feminist Action for Climate Justice Action Coalition and the Gender Environment Data Alliance (GEDA), private foundations, civil society organizations, indigenous leaders and local communities and academia.

The COP28 thematic program is designed to unite a diverse range of stakeholders—all levels of governments, youth, business and investors, civil society, frontline communities, indigenous peoples, and others—around specific solutions that must be scaled up this decade to limit warming to 1.5 degrees.

Many are hoping a significant result to come out of COP28 will be a shared commitment to triple the global renewable energy capacity by 2030, along with a pledge to double energy efficiency by the decade’s end.

While the President is away, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, G. Wesseh Blamoh, will act as Chair of the Cabinet in consultation with the Vice President and via telephone conversation with the President.
