–As Grand Mufti

In response to a public service notice issued by the Secretary of the of the National Muslim Council of Liberia (NMCL), Mr. A.F. Kuku Reeves, Sr., alleging that Sheikh Abubakar Sumaworo has been removed from the religious portfolio as Grand Mufti of Liberia, the Liberia Muslim Union (LMU) has taken exception to the NMCL’s announcement, terming it as far from the truth.

In a release issued on September 19,2023 in Monrovia signed by Ayouba Jawaraka, Secretary, and approved by Mahmoud Fofana, Chairman of the Liberia Muslim Union, the Liberia Muslim Union said, “We, the Liberia Muslim Union would like to inform the general public that the public service notice by the National Muslim Council of Liberia’s Secretary General Reeves that Sheikh Sumaworo is no longer the Grand Mufti of Liberia  lacks basis, and meant to deceive the public and the outside world.

According to the Liberia Muslim Union’s two officials, Sheikh Abubakar Sumaworo is the only Grand Mufti of Liberia duly recognized by the union in the Republic of Liberia.

“Therefore, we, through this medium, call on all local, international organizations and persons to freely continue to work with our distinguished Grand Muhti (Sheikh Abubakar Sumaworo) of Liberia,” stated the Liberia Muslim Union in its media release issued over the weekend in Monrovia.

Sheikh Abubakar Sumaworo, the Liberia Muslim Union reiterated, was at no time removed from the post as is being propagated by A.  F. Kuku Reeves, Sr., secretary of the National Muslim Council in the public domain.

Meanwhile, the Liberia Muslim Union is extending thanks and appreciation to all its member institutions for the support and cooperation towards the smooth operations of the union in the country, wishing that” Allah continues to bless us all as we peacefully spread the true teaching of Islam throughout the country”.
