President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has announced new measures aimed at strengthening the quality and delivery of higher education at the University of Liberia, including a personal contribution of US$50,000 toward institutional development.
Speaking on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the University’s 105th Commencement Convocation of the Graduate and Professional Schools, held at the Fendall Campus in Louisiana, Montserrado County, President Boakai, serving in his capacity as Visitor of the University expressed the central role of higher education in Liberia’s national development agenda.
The President made a personal donation of US$50,000 to support the establishment of a modern research laboratory, explaining that the contribution was drawn from savings realized through his voluntary salary reduction. He indicated that proceeds from similar savings initiatives would continue to be directed toward projects that deliver tangible national benefits.
President Boakai disclosed that more than six million United States dollars have been appropriated in the Fiscal Year 2026 National Budget to improve infrastructure and learning conditions across the university. He emphasized that modern facilities are essential to fostering academic excellence and providing students with an environment reflective of their ambitions and potential.
Addressing institutional governance, the Liberian leader called on the university’s administration to strengthen academic, administrative, financial, and disciplinary standards. He noted that sustained progress within higher education requires accountability, integrity, and consistent adherence to established standards.
“Excellence is never accidental; it is the product of discipline, integrity, and the courage to uphold standards,” the President stated, adding that restoring the university’s prestige and global competitiveness demands collective responsibility from leadership, faculty, students, and alumni alike.
Turning to the graduating class, President Boakai commended the graduates for their resilience and determination throughout their academic journey. He described them as members of Liberia’s emerging specialized workforce, positioned to contribute meaningfully to national transformation.
He encouraged the graduates to embrace ethical leadership and national service, urging them to place governance above greed, service above self-interest, and vision above personal vindication.
The President also called for renewed energy within the University’s alumni association, describing alumni engagement as vital to strengthening institutional reputation, expanding professional opportunities for graduates, and mobilizing financial and technical support.
As an alumnus of the university, he encouraged former students to reconnect with and support their alma mater.
Recognizing the University of Liberia’s long-standing role in shaping national consciousness and democratic discourse, President Boakai urged that student engagement remain peaceful, constructive, and anchored in dialogue. He underscored that the campus must continue to serve as a marketplace of ideas and a center of innovation that advances national unity and progress.
