Past enactments declaring the birthdays of two earlier Presidents, Joseph Jenkins Roberts and William V S Tubman, as national holidays in Liberia may soon find themselves in the trash can as new ideas interplay in the House of Representatives.

Nimba County Representative, Nyahn Flomo, said the two public holidays are outdated and should be replaced with a single day to remember all presidents that contributed to the growth of the country.

He pointed out that lawmakers at the time made a mistake by declaring a holiday to celebrate the birth of only two presidents, leaving out the others who equally made sacrifices to move the country forward.

Representative Flomo argued that if there is any recognition for past leaders, it should be spread across all Presidents, starting from Joseph Jenkins Robert to present.

In a letter to plenary, Representative Flomo proposed a single holiday called “President Day” to be observed throughout the country in recognition of sacrifices made by past presidents of Liberia.

The Nimba County district #2 lawmaker urged his colleagues in the House of Representatives to support the bill and ensure its passage into law as soon as possible.

The proposed law will repeal earlier legislations that declare public holiday to celebrate the births of just two presidents, out of twenty-six.

Each year Liberia observes national holiday on Mach 15 to celebrate J.J. Roberts birthday and November 29 to celebrate Williams V.S. Tubman’s birthday.
