Rep. Koiwood Proposes Bill For The Establishment Of Gbarpolu Community College
Gbarpolu County’s electoral district #1 Representative, Alfred G. Koiwood, has submitted a communication to members of the House’s plenary seeking for an act for the creation of the Gbarpolu County Community College.
The lawmaker’s communication, addressed to House Speaker Dr. Bhofal Chambers and members of that honorable body recently, emphasized the right fully guaranteed by the Constitution of Liberia: equal access to educational privileges and facilities for citizens.
The Gbarpolu County lawmaker’s communication stated that the Constitution of Liberia squarely lays emphasis on every Liberian having equal right to education, taking into consideration the foreseeable need for the creation of a community college in the county in order to enhance higher education, as well as the essence for decentralizing tertiary education in the leeward counties.
The House’s Committee Chairman on National Security Communication added that he realizes the high level of illiteracy rate in Liberia, which amounts to about 65%, with Gbarpolu County no exception, and is aware that not a single tertiary establishment can be boasted of in Gbarpolu County, making secondary education a bus stop for most of the young people.
The lawmaker’s letter is quoted as saying that, if the bill is passed into law, it will provide the opportunity for Gbarpolu citizens and those of surrounding counties to achieve tertiary education.
The lawmaker’s bill was read in plenary, with a motion passed by members of the august body that it be submitted to the Committee on Higher Education for onward review and sent for recommendation.
