SCNL And Partners Host Two-Day “Just Forest Restoration” Workshop

The Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL), along with partners on Tuesday began a two-day workshop aimed at finding a pathway for socially and ecologically effective restoration in Liberia.

SCNL, Birdlife International, the University of East Anglia, UK, along with other local partners commenced its two-day “Just Restoration Workshop”, with a specific focus on shaping restoration initiatives in Liberia with key interest in social justice and equity forestry issues.

The Executive Director of SCNL, Michael Garbo, giving the opening remarks, used the occasion to welcome his colleagues from Birdlife International, the University of East Anglia, EPA, FDA, and other partners who are involved within the initiative of appropriate management of the landscape, including the challenges and gaps that need to be filled.

Also speaking, the Senior Policy Manager of Birdlife International, Poshendra Satyal, said they aim to discuss the different challenges in making restoration and conservation effective and equitable in Liberia.
According to him, the insights generated from the two-day workshop will be equally relevant to the discussion around conservation and restoration in Liberia.

“In ensuring that restoration is in line with the local values, benefits-sharing, we need to address social justice and restoration in finding the balancing between equitable agenda and social justice agenda in the policy-making and implementation of restoration in Liberia,” he said.

The training had several representatives from both governmental institutions, along with other civil society actors within the forestry and environmental sector.
