Grand Cape Mount County’s Senator, Varney G. Sherman, on Saturday, December 4, 2021 broke ground for the construction of a six-classroom school and administration unit in Gold Camp, Gola Konneh District.
Senator Sherman is expected to finance the project while the community provides the labor for the construction of the school, which is to be completed before the end of the rainy season.
Gold Camp, with an estimated 10,000 inhabitants, currently has a three-classroom school constructed in 2017 by the Norwegian Refugee Council and later turned over to the Liberian government.
Performing the ceremony, Senator Sherman underscored the importance of education in human development and advancement in society.
The groundbreaking ceremony was part of programs organized by the citizens to re-petition Senator Varney Sherman to seek re-election in the 2023 general and presidential elections.
The ceremony was attended by thousands of citizens, including chiefs as well as traditional zoes, women and youth groups in Gola Konneh District, Grand Cape Mount County.
The petitioners referenced Senator Sherman’s unmatched qualifications and performance at the Senate, as well as his numerous developmental and assistance programs initiated in Grand Cape Mount County.
The nine-year tenure of Senator Sherman, who was elected in 2014, expires in 2023.
Accepting the petition, Senator Sherman expressed gratitude to the people of Gola Konneh District for acknowledging his contributions to nation building and the petition for him to seek re-election.
He urged citizens of Gola Konneh District to not only petition him, but to also reach out and campaign vigorously in further manifestation of their decision and ensure victory in the 2023 general elections.
Senator Sherman disclosed several lawmaking initiatives he is undertaking at the Senate to address major challenges that the country faces, including road maintenance, nationwide access to mobile telecommunications and electrification.
He said with 40 years of legal practice and vast experience, he is committed to working in the best interest of not only Grand Cape Mount County, but also Liberia and, therefore, accepted the petition to seek re-election as Senator of Grand Cape Mount County.
