Liberians home and abroad are threatening to lock down the Capitol Building, home of the National Legislature, until members of the House return to normalcy.
The protest is being organized by the “Concerned Citizens for the Protection of our Constitution, Democracy, and the Rule of Law”, and is expected to begin on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
According to information, the planners are requesting that lawmakers return to the main chambers of the House of Representatives and show respect for the ruling of the Supreme Court.
The protest may serve as a call for lawmakers to overcome gridlock and make progress on critical legislation. The protesters may likely urge the Legislature to prioritize national interests over political differences and pass laws that address the needs of the people.
Individuals in the United States of America have pledged to provide logistic support and assorted food items to sustain the protest until the matter on Capitol Hill can reach a logical conclusion.
The Concerned Liberians Network Inc, based in the United States, has pledged full support for the planned protest, and is said to have begun a massive fundraiser as a means of providing logistics and other needy items to the Liberian people in their quest to ensure the rule of law is protected on Capitol Hill.
An eminent lawyer and a signatory to the 1986 Constitution, Cllr. Pearl Brown-Bull, has openly expressed support for the planned Tuesday protest and vowed to be present on the ground of the Capitol to stage the protest.
Cllr. Bull is prominent for her stance for the straight adherence to the rule of law. She is also a former Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Her support for the protest has ignited heavy support for the peaceful rally, and threatens to be the last straw to resolve the Capitol Hill impasse.
However, skeptics are wondering if the protest will not end up just like the one recently organized by Vandalark Patricks and others, which had no impact on the matter.
In a related development, The National Foot Soldiers of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has endorsed the up-coming protest organized by the Concerned Liberians, criticizing the Unity Party government for alleged broken promises, Constitutional violations, unresolved mysterious deaths, and economic hardships.
The CDC Foot Soldiers accused the UP administration of failing to prosecute corruption, disrespecting Supreme Court’s rulings, dismissing civil servants and collaborating with GSM companies to restrict affordable data packages. They also condemned the high unemployment rate and coercion of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Foot Soldiers called on their members across the fifteen counties to join the protest to demand accountability and send a message to the government, noting that “enough is enough”.
