UMU President: “We Are Getting There”

Since the coming in of the first female President of the United Methodist University ( UMU), there seems to have some changes at the  campuses of the university.

 Rev. Yar Donlah Gonway-Gono, Ph.D., informed the Hot Pepper that during her ninety days in office she and her team have been focused on the renovation of the university and manpower development.

   According to her, the outlook of the university is part of her priorities. She said she is concerned about the well-being of students at the university.

   Gono said since her ascendency as the President of UMU she has also been focused on the payment of workers’ salaries at the university. Since 2020, due to the outbreak of the deadly Corona viral disease, staff of the university have not been receiving their salaries. But since the leadership of Dr. Gono was inducted at the University at least ninety percent of salary arrears have been paid. The university credited US$150,000 from the a bank, but this has also been paid. Currently, the President and Vice President offices at the university have been renovated, with on-going renovation at business and admission offices.

   Commenting more on her platform, the university president vowed to make the United Methodist University (UMU) the number one university in the midst of other universities in Liberia. Dr. Gono said she wants all hands on deck in the transformation process of the university. She said everyone at the university is key to the forward march of the university.

   Dr. Gono is a proud beneficiary of the United Methodist Church’s Ph.D. scholarship program. She is the former president of the Nimba Community College, now Nimba University.

   Commenting in that regard, she said she feels proud to give back to the university and Liberia at large.
