The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Liberia, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, on Friday received a petition from a coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) urging the Government of Liberia to increase financial and logistical support to the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Courts (OWECC-Liberia).
The coalition—comprising human rights advocates, victims’ groups, and pro-justice campaigners—peacefully assembled on the premises of the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) to present their petition.
Receiving the document on behalf of the government, Minister Tweh commended the civil society actors for responsibly exercising their constitutional rights and for their continued advocacy toward strengthening Liberia’s justice system.
He reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
“The Ministry of Justice acknowledges your concerns and assures you that the government will expeditiously review your petition and act where necessary, in line with established national priorities and budgetary processes,” Cllr. Tweh stated.
Minister Tweh further encouraged the civil society representatives to continue engaging constructively with relevant authorities rather than resorting to actions that could lead to disorder or civil disobedience. He emphasized that dialogue and collaboration remain the most effective paths toward achieving shared national goals.
“We understand the passion that drives your advocacy,” he added. “However, we urge you to remain law-abiding and to continue to engage through dialogue. The ministry remains open to consultations and partnerships with civil society to advance justice and accountability for all Liberians.”
The submission of the petition marks a significant moment in the on-going national discourse surrounding the operationalization and sustainability of the War and Economic Crimes Courts—an initiative widely regarded as essential to ending impunity and strengthening good governance in Liberia. The Ministry of Justice reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, international partners, and the Legislature, to ensure that justice institutions are adequately equipped to fulfill their mandates in the interest of peace, justice, and national reconciliation.
