Editorial: Opposition Leader Dr. Cassell Decries Economic Hardship
THE STANDARD BEARER of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), Dr. Daniel E. Cassell, has disclosed that the year 2021 was marred by extreme poverty, hardship and the flaunting of ill-gotten wealth by public officials under the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government of President George Manneh Weah. Dr. Cassell was speaking during his New Year’s Day message.
HE OBSERVED THAT Liberia’s wealth and resources were depleted to benefit the elites and those at the helm of power, while the vast majority of the Liberian people went to bed on empty stomachs in the midst of the flaunting of alleged ill-gotten wealth by President Weah and his confidantes.
DR. CASSELL MAINTAINED that 2021 post-conflict Liberia was occasioned by economic constraints, lack of respect for the rule of law, barrage of injustices, ritualistic killings and unexplained deaths, attacks on critical voices and perceived enemies of the state, and the clamping down on opposition politicians.
“MY FELLOW COMPATRIOTS, the year 2021 was marred with extreme poverty, economic backwardness, flaunting of ill-gotten wealth by the President and his confidantes, the elevation of the spectators’ role being played by Liberians in their own economy despite the professed and deceitful promise made by the President when he was inaugurated in January 2018, cronyism, partisanship, among others,” Dr. Cassell stated.
THE OPPOSITION LEADER has therefore decried the high rate of unemployment and hardship confronting Liberians under the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government of President George Manneh Weah.
