The Government of the Republic of Liberia (GOL) has uprightly commended the former Indian Consul General, Upjit Singh Sachdeva (Jeety), for his humanitarian services to the Republic of Liberia and its people, as well as recognized his selfless contributions to prison facilities in the country, mainly the Monrovia Central Prison (South Beach Prison).
Speaking Thursday, November 11, 2021 at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism’s regular press briefing, the Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs of Information Ministry, Jarlawah Tonpo, said the government was using the occasion to commend Jeety for the selfless humanitarian gestures that he is single-handedly undertaking as a businessman.
Deputy Minister Tonpo told the MICAT press briefing, “I would also like to inform you that the government wishes to commend Upjit Singh Sachdeva—commonly known as Jeety—for his humanitarian gestures towards the national prison facility in Monrovia, commonly known as the South Beach Prison.”
He continued, “Jeety, as an individual businessman, is currently carrying on technical work at the prison facility to enable the facility to have running water at the soonest possible time.
“Beside the running water project, Jeety is also providing daily meal for old folks and disadvantaged youth in the society. This is a welcoming information and news, and we must appreciate Mr. Jeety for these humanitarian initiatives,” Deputy Minister Tonpo noted.
It can be recalled that, since the deadly Coronavirus outbreak in Liberia in March 2020, Jeety has been providing cooked meal and drinks for many segments of the Liberian populace, including disadvantaged youths (zogoes), inmates, old folks, homeless and slum communities, such as West Point, Center Street, PHP, Vai Town, and so on.
For the Monrovia Central Prison, Jeety has come to its rescue a countless times, providing food, water, soft drink, cake, mattresses, etc. to the inmates through the prison superintendents. During one of his recent visits to the prison, down Center Street, Jeety observed that the water system of the prison was damaged, and immediately promised to ensure that it is restored.
True to his words, the technical work for the restoration of the damaged water system is on-going, and expected to be completed soon.
For the countless humanitarian services Jeety rendered the Liberian society, especially during the heights of COVID-19, many media houses awarded him their most prestigious honor in 2020, “Humanitarian of the Year”.
Also, the Government of Liberia (GOL), through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Friday, April 23, 2021 bestowed upon Jeety its esteemed honor: “Knight Grand Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption in Nimba County”, for his over two decades of service to the people of Liberia while he served as Consul General of India.
These awards only seem to rejuvenate the former Indian Consul General’s enthusiasm to serve humanity, as he continues to do more for the less fortunate of the Liberian society.
Speaking to the Hot Pepper in an exclusive interview yesterday, Jeety reiterated that it is blessed to give than to receive, and that he will continue to serve humanity on a charitable basis to receive the blessings of God, as he is of the conviction that he is doing God’s work.
He noted that he was humbled by the kind words from the Government of Liberia (GOL), adding that the government has continued to prove that his services are not going unnoticed.
