House Creates New District In Maryland

The plenary of the House of Representatives has passed and forwarded to the Liberian Senate an Act Creating the Kunon Statutory District in Maryland County.

   Plenary took the decision on Tuesday as a result of a report from the House’s Joint Committee on Internal Affairs, Ways Means & Finance and Judiciary, noting that the act will enhance and improve local government structure in the county.

   According to the committee’s report, the passage of the proposed act is important due to the fast growing population of the region, with challenged development activities. The report said it will help to foster and strengthen local governance in that rural county.

   The report further explained that the proposed act will enable local residents to ensure their community have new and better services and infrastructure, as well as adequate specialized services essential to their health, safety, economy and well-being.

   “And the bill enables the creation of necessary institutions to enhance governance system and increase the economic activities within this area, that will ultimately result into an improved local governance structure for the people who will now see the impact of national government,” the report stated.

   The Maryland County district #3 Representative, Isaac B.  Roland, applauded plenary of the House of Representatives for overwhelmingly voting for the passage of the bill.

   The bill, which was introduced by Maryland County’s district #3 Representative, was read on June 6, 2022 and subsequently sent to the House’s joint committee.
